Winter doesn’t signal the end of the gardening season, in fact it can be a busy time with many tasks needing done. Generally, winter’s in the Greater Glasgow area are not too severe, which means many and varied work to be carried out.....
Many shrubs such as Cotinus and Lilac, require pruning, Fruit trees like apples and pears can also be pruned at this time of year. Uneven and thick hedges can be renovated during the winter months leaving you with a nice straight hedge for summer. Hybrid Tea and Floribunda roses need reduced in height to prevent windrock breaking their stems. Herbaceous plants need cutting back and some can be divided and transplanted.
Winter is the ideal time to plant trees and shrubs. Laying turf can also be done if the ground is not too frosty. The winter months are a perfect time to tidy up your garden or plan what you want to do with your outdoor space so its ready for you to enjoy in the summer! Hard landscaping works like fencing, gates, paving etc can all be carried out during the milder days.
If you have a greenhouse, don't forget that needs maintenance as well and now is the time to give it a good clean before seeds are sown and cuttings taken. Sheds could also benefit from new roof felt and any repairs needing done. And lets not forget that when the snow finally does arrive, paths and stairs will need cleared and salt put down to prevent it icing up!
